Re: Cardinal Rules (FAQ) of wradriving

2. It is best to use Kismet. Netstumbler is also popular. Don't forget KisMac for the Mac users :) 6. No, the $20 mag mount you saw is probably not a good deal. Possibly not, but it depends on how good it is, and who you're buying from (I have my sources :) ) 7. Fab-corp is a good place to start lo...

Also, related to the article the county sheriff is quoted as saying "cantennas" (famous pringles antennas) are ilegal :roll:
Strictly speaking, if you built it yourself, yes it is, under FCC regulations.

Using our imagery for commercial use without consent, for sensationalized scare selling, is irking. You know what to do. It's C&D time :) I also note that they have nice "featured on Fox" buttons, that'd be about right :) Interesting, there's BSSIDs in plaintext. Theoretically one cou...

If you can, get a prism2 card such as the Senao NC-2511-EXT2 (be careful not to end up with the prism3 version). Two antenna sockets, they're MMCX (easier to find connectors for than MCCard), and there's diversity (stick 2 antennas on it as opposed to the orinoco's 1). It's also got a MUCH better re...

<no ssid>

:)
Seriously? Was it a hidden SSID?

In that case, post the GPS coordinates, we go over there, and wait until someone authenticates to it... we must have that ssid :)

Can you reveal what the 9millionth SSID/BSSID was? Just interested to know?

Edit: Wow, my 50th post (not nearly as important as the 9millionth network though :) )

Re: PokingStick(tm)

Hmm, where's Dutch and the PokingStick(tm)?

Queue has been stuck at 100+ for at least 36 hours now.
Yeah. My file was #150 last night when I submitted my file, is #105 now...

It IS possible to query the search function for the APs in a certain area. It's possible to code something like this, but it's not a good idea. Well all I can say, then, is that the growing corpus of data that's queried exactly this way in more and more areas of interest, with growing datasets, is ...

I'm not going to risk giving WiGLE something that could amount to basically a DDOS attack just to see if it happens without the permission of the people who run it. As far as I know, doing this properly wouldn't work unless the wigle people did it themselves -- or let someone code for that kind of ...

I'm not too sure WiGLE would hold up to doing this. Plus, their plugin doesn't even view all the networks - it would be way too many... If WiGLE's TOS was a little less restrictive (someone else could mirror the db and provide this service), this may be a little easier... but that just opens a whol...

Re: not to sound stupid here

ham = amateur radio operator

the numbers/letters = callsign, their way of identifying a station, kinda like a wifi SSID :)

When you move to Linux, use gpsd (well, kismet requires it anyway) - it listens on a TCP port, so there's none of this serial port stupidity...

Imagine a 10 fold increase in bandwith usage (and thats pretty low set), if there was a mashup that needed to pull data down live, for each movement of a users viewport on G.E.. How long do you think they would be able to keep running their project, while still being able to afford a decent life ? ...

Mmm... new gear, and new software

Picked up some more gear recently. A 150W inverter :D Tested a new setup today. WRAP 2 in it's metal case with dual 2dbi antennas (yeah, 2dbi, i know, i'll give it dual 6s soon...), and a CM9 card in it. I might add a second card at some point. Running kismet_server on it, and connected via Ethernet...

I've got a Python app to do this that runs client-side, and uses your wigle login to query. AFAIK, this doesn't violate the EULA, as it runs on the user's machine, and requires them to type their wigle username/password into it to get the login cookie to authenticate the search. Should I release it?...
