Determine speed

Hi!

I've noticed that the Android Application provides several options to select different wifi scanning intervals depending on speed (0 mph, < 5 mph, > 5 mph), but I was wondering how they manage to determine the user's speed. Is it with the GPS or do they use another way to determine it?

The speed is queried from the Android Location API, so something below in the software stack (android os, gps driver, maybe on-chip) is doing the calculation using gps data.
