Debian is Linux, and free. You can download it, and read more about it at Debian.org.

Kismet is the wardriving program that I use, also for linix and free.

You can install them both on your existing computer and dual boot, Vista for everyday use, and Debian when you wardrive. I've been meaning to set up a howto, but RL is getting in the way of everything lately, I havent been keeping up with my wardriving either :P

And why not your not going to get in the top 10 that way

Red Dragon you could give]backtrack or any live cd. A live cd runs in ram and doesn't change anything on your hardrive.

I'm not sure anything really 'works' with windows. That aside..

I do know I used to run NS on XP without issue other than no s/n, which wasnt important to me (or for this site really). If XP can see your card, NS should be able to scan some of the AP's in your area. Windows is limited however, it cant put the card into RFmon where it can sniff everything that hits the antenna. It can only send a 'hey, anybody out there' and hope for an answer before you go out of range. The other downside to this is the fact that any AP set to 'invisible' or no broadcast will not answer the 'anybody out there' question at all.

For the most part, you should just put in your drivers, pop in your card and start up netstumbler and let it turn off the autoconfig if it asks to. Other than that, the only other setup I remembered having to do was tell it how to talk to my GPS, and then arrange the columns so they looked all pretty on my screen. Pretty straightforward. If you have any odd problems, or dont know if your card works (and I think almost all of them do under XP, so they should under vista) check out the NS forums. You can get some REALLY good help there.

Now I have to ask, what do you want to do? Are you going to wardrive and upload to wigle? You haven't been very useful in the information area. Take a little time and give us a full paragraph.
