new Kismet laptop : general Newb questions :)

The gear needed for wardriving

Good day all,

Am setting up a single purpose small laptop for Kismet use, and was wondering what log file formats folks are using, to retain the most data. Laptop is nothing special, Acer Aspire 1410, CPU is SU2500 / 4g ram / 250g HD but should be fine for this?

I see at http://wigle.net/gps/gps/main/postfile/ that upload is supported in ".csv, .xml, .netxml, .gps, .gpsxml, .nettxt, CWGD output" but haven't even delved deep enough to see how to format the logs ;)

Have done one full read through @ http://www.kismetwireless.net/documentation.shtml for getting the general idea, and have just installed the .deb files onto Ubuntu 10.10 desktop there. Thankfully, it seems to recognize my new Alfa AWUS036H immediately on usb plug-in

I'm very happy with the Wigle Android client, just looking for more range and coverage from a vehicle setup. (hopefully, I will expand this to a semi-permanent dedicated system in the jeep : thinking near-term of 4 external USB units of some sort, and scripting - to keep it friendly on submissions, shutdown and startup based on inverter power, etc.)

I do have a USGlobalSat BU-353, and a couple of active extender 5m USB2 cables. Am certainly not to the point for antennas of drilling metal like my old amateur radio days on the metal jeep roof <hah> but will probably mount this all inside the cabin for now.

General thoughts appreciated, for a fellow who's somewhat linux / hardware familiar, but new @ the whole Wigle / wardriving bit. (never had time / budget when this was 'new', it seems!)

Thanks friends for your input . . .

Thanks for everyone's work on Wigle & WarDriving in general ;)
