The Friends of Downtown presents:

Chicago: City of the Big Bandwidth

Wi-Fi and Downtown Chicago
Forever Open, Clear and Cost-Free?

What does Starbucks charge $6 per hour for that you can get for free across the street under the Picasso compliments of the City of Chicago?

What do private sector retail outlets Schlotzky’s and Panera Bread offer for free that some public sector agencies charge money for?

The answer is Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, a radiolike signal that can transmit a high-speed, wireless Internet connection to computers and hand-held devices.

As the number of Wi-Fi free “hot-spot” locations spread rapidly across public spaces, a growing number of municipalities and grassroots organizations feel obligated to view Wi-Fi as a cost-free public good.

Join Friends of Downtown member Jimm Dispensa in welcoming guest panelists, Stelios Valavanis and Sprio Papadopolous for an overview of Wi-Fi technology and a forward look at the intersection of Downtown Chicago and advanced wireless technologies.

When: Thursday, May 6, 2004, 12:15pm – 1:15pm
