Google Earth Pro with large datasets
Many years ago I started a project to assist with gold prospecting research and data collection. I took GIS data sets that I thought might be of some use and I began making a system to interface Google Earth with it without swamping it's memory limit. Over time it has been re-written from ASP to PHP, using static content to database storage using spatial functions. Right now I have over 300 data sets that contain almost 40 million points, lines or polygon sets. I have full access and use of the entire database without any GE issues. The system can also pull data from 3rd party services (typically with an API) then on-the-fly recode it so it works just as internal data would. An example of this the the USGS's waterwatch system. Upon request, the system gets up-to-date data, reformats it and then displays it within the GE client with all details included. The system's primary function besides the aggregation of data into a single menu is to act as a manager to protect the GE client from overload. I do still consider it to be under development but is functional. It has export features but they are not operational at the moment due to massive changes made recently to the system. I haven't gotten to them yet, however when they are fixed one can export from selected collections based upon a provided polygon. The goal is to allow easy export of desired data to personal storage in GE or for in-field off-line mobile use. As this system was developed, certain issues developed that required attention as to maintain a useable system. Compression was implemented for the GPS data and the simple method of determining if a record falls within the view area was upgraded to use spatial functions dropping an average result time from 2 seconds to around .02. I would like to explore the idea of making wiggle data accessible through my system and try both methods, by relay and by importing the data into the database. Depending on the data quantity, I may have to limit it to NC area only as all my project data is.
I am posting this hoping the wiggle team might approve and assist me with connecting our services as well as getting some feedback from the community here.
