Hi all,
simple question for a newbie, I bought a holux 236 gpslim.
the device is sihpped with a 2.4 kernel driver. I found out that's a normal
usbserial + pl-2303 driver.

now the problem is quite simple, I compile my 2.6 kernel (tried also with 2.6.20) with usbserial subsystem and pl2303 but, when I plug my USB-device, the kernel doesn't recognize anything!!!

It's a strange think, afaik it would tell me "new high speed device etc. etc." without recognizing the driver... but telling nothing it's too strange...

the very strange thing is that with the SAME cable under windows it works.

any help or hint or documentation to read would be appreciated.

Best Regards

That just means you have the correct modules compiled, but if your hotplug subsystem isn't set up correctly then it won't recognize that you plugged in the PL2303 based USB-to-Serial device.
You can either manually load the pl2303 driver (modprobe pl2303) when you have plugged in the USB GPS, or fix your hotplug configuration.

Hi, Dutch

thank you for fast response.
I load the pl2303 driver via modprobe, but still nothing.

what do you mean "fix hotplug configuration?"

I have the hotplug & udev in my kernel, note I'm using fedora core 5.

could you please help ?

best regards

I don-t think it`s an hotplug problem

Silly question, but do you have the special Holux 'data' cable? My Mac recognizes that my 236 is plugged in, but won't talk to the unit because I don't have the special data cable....

I've only ever had that problem listed above from your dmesg output, with a USB port that was starting to become unhinged on the laptop motherboard. Had to solder a new usb port onto the laptop to fix it.

Do you have the same problem with other USB devices ?
